SINGAPORE – A new Young Singaporean of the Year award will be introduced to recognise younger Singaporeans who have made a contribution to society through their acts of service, selflessness or courage.

Another award for Singaporeans or Singapore entities that have made a positive impact in the international arena will also be introduced to the Singaporean of the Year awards from 2025.

Mr Jaime Ho, editor of The Straits Times, announced these new categories at the Singaporean of the Year 2024 award ceremony held at the Istana on Feb 24.

The winners and finalists will be announced along with the ST Singaporean of the Year 2025 award.

In his speech, Mr Ho said that going forward, ST will work closely with Mr M.P. Sellvem, president of non-profit organisation Civilians Association (Singapore) (CAS), and his team behind the Singapore Silent Heroes award.

Organised by CAS, the award celebrates ordinary individuals who have performed extraordinary acts of humanity and compassion without seeking recognition or reward.

The award “recognises individuals who have worked without compensation or recognition, silently for the betterment of society and their fellow human beings, doing so with extraordinary dedication”, said Mr Ho, adding that some of the past finalists for Singaporean of the Year have also been recipients of the Singapore Silent Heroes award.

Nominations for the Singapore Silent Heroes award, which is in its 12th edition, are open from Feb 24 to June 15. Individuals can submit their nominations at sgsilentheroes.com/news/2025-nomination-details-category-faq/

The award ceremony will be held on Sept 27.

Over the past 11 years, the Singapore Silent Heroes award has recognised 57 individuals.

Mr Abdul Karim, 32, a senior construction supervisor who runs a Facebook page to help fellow migrant workers navigate working in Singapore, was among those who received the award in 2024.

He was honoured under the Compassionate Foreigner category, which recognises non-Singaporeans who have made a positive difference to Singapore’s community beyond the call of duty.

Other award categories include the Heart of Humanity, awarded to an individual with disabilities who has given back to society, and the Pioneer of Promise award, given to someone born on or before Dec 31, 1950, who has contributed to the community and to nation-building efforts.

In 2023, a new category was launched to recognise students from primary and secondary schools and junior colleges who have shown exemplary work and commitment to help those in need.
