A 10-year-old girl who has been helping her parents since she was three years old receives an award for kindness.
At the age of three, Chia See En began visiting senior citizens living in rental homes in McPherson with her parents, checking on their well-being as part of her volunteer work with the Lions Befrienders organization.
At the age of seven, inspired by his mother, who works in the social services sector, he began his formal volunteering journey with the Singapore Cancer Society.
There, he helped organize, pack, and register for the association’s annual fundraising runs, such as the ‘Relay for Life’, ‘Race Against Cancer’, and ‘Cancer Survivors’ Day’, among other events.
One of the fundraisers helped raise over $8,000 for cancer patients.
Tau Nan School student See An was one of 84 young individuals from 37 schools to receive the ‘Singapore Silent Heroes’ student award on Saturday (July 5).
Launched in 2023 by the Singapore Citizens Association, the award recognizes students who have demonstrated compassion, selflessness, and determination.
These unsung heroes have accomplished many feats in serving their communities. From fundraising and supporting senior citizens to promoting mental health awareness and supporting inclusive education.
Speaking at the event held at the Spring Singapore Indoor Stadium, Deputy Minister for Education, Information and Digital Development Jasmine Lau said,
“Kindness is not only expressed in grand gestures, but also in small individual acts of kindness.
It starts with the early guidance from our parents and educators, who instill in us the qualities of compassion, respect, and responsibility.”
“If we all continue to work to create an environment where peaceful compassion can take root and flourish, together we can build a kinder, stronger and more inclusive Singapore,” he said.
