Heart of Humanity Adult Winner – 2024

After recovery from a serious accident, he showed remarkable resilience and unwavering
dedication to helping many others from students to helping seniors. He currently works in
Tzu Chi Organization’s Day Rehabilitation Centre serving elderly patients.
In 1994, a traffic accident left him critically injured which resulted in permanent amnesia.
But he retained his cognitive abilities and completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education
six years post-trauma, becoming a qualified teacher. His dedication to education and his
students’ heartfelt poetic farewell gifts upon his departure for further studies on Acquired
Brain Injury at La Trobe University in Victoria are testaments to his impact.
His medical journey, including cranio-facial surgeries and the lengthening of his accident-shortened right shin, served as practical demonstrations for medical students. He later joined the Brain Injury Society of Singapore where he became its President. He organized hiking expeditions and support group campfires for post-acquired brain injury survivors, further showcasing his dedication to helping others.
His life story is a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the profound
impact of selflessness and resilience.

Mr. Tan Kok Liang Takalah was nominated for the “Heart of Humanity” Category in the SSH 11th Year Awards 2024. He was the selected winner and received award from Guest of Honour : Mr. Ong Ye Kung – Minister for Health, at Shangri-La Hotel on 7th September 2024.
