The final day of the Breaking Barriers Community Leadership Workshop concluded on 16 January 2026 at Republic Polytechnic’s Block E5 Lecture Theatre, bringing together 91 students for a meaningful culmination of a three day changemaking journey. Organised through a collaboration between the Singapore Silent Heroes Movement, Breaking Barriers and Republic Polytechnic, the programme reflects the Civilians Association (Singapore)’s commitment to nurturing compassionate leaders who actively contribute to society.
The day began with registration and a networking breakfast, allowing students, facilitators and partners to connect and reflect on the experiences gathered throughout the programme. This was followed by welcome remarks that highlighted the importance of empowering youth to recognise their influence and responsibility in shaping a more caring community.
One of the key highlights was the Hackathon Presentation, where students showcased their ideas developed during the workshop. Drawing from design thinking principles such as empathy mapping, the iceberg model and problem definition frameworks, participants presented solutions addressing real social issues in Singapore. Their proposals were inspired by community initiatives they encountered during the programme, including mobile groceries distribution by Hao Ren Hao Shi, the pillow exchange initiative by Reach Out and the meal distribution efforts by Saturday Movement.
A fireside chat titled “From Ideas to Impact: Shaping Tomorrow, Together” further enriched the session. Distinguished speakers including Mariam Jaafar, Member of Parliament for Woodlands Division, Dr Raymond from Woodlands Health and several community leaders shared insights on leadership, service and innovation in the social sector. The discussion encouraged students to view changemaking not as a one time effort but as a lifelong commitment to community.
The programme concluded with a prize presentation recognising outstanding hackathon teams, followed by a networking lunch and a viewing of Republic Polytechnic’s Final Year Project exhibition. Students also interacted with partners such as Care Corner, Savvy Systems and Ardent English Learners, gaining further exposure to community initiatives and social innovation.
Throughout the workshop, one message stood out clearly: “Real change begins when ordinary individuals decide to care deeply about the communities around them.”
By the end of the programme, students walked away with a stronger understanding of social challenges, practical tools to develop solutions and the confidence to take action. Through initiatives like Breaking Barriers, CAS continues to cultivate a new generation of changemakers who are ready to serve with empathy, purpose and courage.
