The second day of the Breaking Barriers Community Leadership Workshop took students beyond the classroom and into the heart of the community. Held on 13 December 2025, this learning journey formed an important part of the three day programme organised by the Singapore Silent Heroes Movement, Breaking Barriers and Republic Polytechnic in collaboration with several community partners.
Aligned with the mission of Civilians Association (Singapore) to inspire compassion and responsible citizenship, the day focused on service learning. Students were divided into three groups and deployed to different community initiatives where they could experience the realities of community work while engaging directly with beneficiaries.
At Marsiling Lane, 18 students supported the Hao Ren Hao Shi Mobile Groceries initiative. The team distributed essential grocery items to around 200 residents, ensuring each household received basic necessities alongside a McDonald’s McNuggets voucher. Beyond the distribution, students spent time speaking with residents and learning about their daily lives. Many shared that the simple act of interaction helped them better understand the importance of kindness and dignity when serving the community.
Another group joined the Saturday Movement team at Lengkok Bahru. Here, students assisted in distributing bread and fruits to about 50 residents before helping to serve lunch to elderly beneficiaries. The experience allowed students to see how a warm meal and friendly conversation can bring comfort to seniors in the neighbourhood.
Meanwhile, at French Road and King George’s Avenue, students partnered with Reach Out for a meaningful 1 for 1 pillow exchange initiative. A total of 150 pillows were replaced in the homes of elderly residents. Some students shared that stepping into these homes opened their eyes to the complex realities faced by seniors living alone. One participant reflected on how witnessing these conditions firsthand changed his understanding of vulnerability in society.
The learning journey reinforced a powerful message for everyone involved: “Leadership is not only about ideas, it is about showing up for people who need us.”
Students ended the day with a deeper appreciation of community service and a renewed commitment to contribute meaningfully to society. Through experiences like these, CAS continues to nurture future changemakers who understand that compassion and action go hand in hand.
