The care we carry forward
As a first-time attendee at the Singapore Silent Heroes Appreciation Night 2026, I was struck
by the warmth of the occasion. Beyond honouring individuals for their service and
generosity, the evening offered a reassuring reminder of the compassion that exists in many
corners of our society, often quietly and without any expectation of recognition.
The evening brought together people from different backgrounds and at different stages of
life. Their stories varied, but they shared a willingness to notice when someone needed help
and to respond. In a city that can sometimes feel hurried and impersonal, there was
something deeply reassuring about seeing such care acknowledged.
I was particularly moved by the segments recognising students and migrant workers. The
recognition of the students carried a quiet promise. To appreciate a young person for
helping others is to affirm qualities worth nurturing: the willingness to notice, to respond
and to take responsibility for a world beyond oneself. Alongside academic and other
achievements, these qualities deserve encouragement. A young person who learns that
compassion matters may carry that understanding far beyond the moment of recognition.
The segment featuring migrant workers invited me to reflect on how much of another
person’s life can remain outside our view. We may know someone by the work they do
without knowing the relationships they sustain, the hopes they hold or the generosity they
offer. Seeing their contributions recognised was a welcome reminder to look more closely at
the people with whom we share this city.
I would not presume to know what each recipient carries. Yet the evening showed that
compassion can find a place even within lives that are already demanding. Someone may be
navigating uncertainty and still make room for another person’s needs. There is tenderness
in that choice, and hope in knowing that we need not have everything settled before we can
offer something meaningful.
The value of recognising such service extends beyond one evening. These stories encourage
us to notice acts of compassion in our own surroundings and to consider how we might
contribute. Schools, workplaces and community groups can help by making participation
accessible and giving thoughtful attention to quieter forms of service.
What I carried home was a renewed sense of connection. We do not need identical
experiences to care for one another. Perhaps the most lasting tribute to those recognised is
to let their example shape how we meet others, with greater attention, patience and a
willingness to help.
