Chua Teong Lam Thomas
Outstanding Adult Winner – 2025
Nominated by:
Sim Mei Tian – Friend

For more than five years, Thomas Chua has carried out a daily act of compassion—distributing
rice 365 days a year to residents in need. Come rain or shine, weekday or weekend, he has
never missed a single day since the initiative began in 2019.

What started as a humble effort to help those quietly struggling with food insecurity has evolved
into a powerful, community-driven movement—built on leadership, empathy, and unwavering
consistency.

A Lifeline for Some, A Launchpad for Others

The daily rice distribution not only ensures no one goes hungry, but also uplifts those who were
once recipients into contributors. Thomas encourages residents to volunteer and take
ownership, transforming their self-worth through meaningful service. Many who once relied on
the support now help distribute rice to others—creating a ripple effect of dignity, purpose, and
empowerment.

Sustained by One Man’s Commitment

While volunteers have since joined the effort, the initiative remains very much Thomas’s vision
and daily responsibility. He personally handles the planning, sourcing, and execution, ensuring
every day runs smoothly. His dedication has created a resilient, compassionate, and self-
sustaining community, deeply connected through shared care.

Stepping Up in Times of Crisis

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Thomas extended his role beyond rice distribution—going
door-to-door to check in on residents, offer encouragement, and ensure their well-being. In a
time of fear and isolation, his presence became a symbol of stability and solidarity.

Driven by Responsibility, Sustained by Heart

Thomas expanded his wife, Linda’s initiative in feeding the elderly on weekends in 2008 after
noticing deeper needs in the community. They were doing their work at the void deck in Holland
and Ghim Moh for about 8 years before moving to Jalan Kukoh. no fanfare, he simply took
action—and never stopped. His work is not just about food—it’s about restoring connection,
confidence, and community spirit.

His tireless efforts reflect what it truly means to serve with heart and integrity—making Thomas
a quiet but powerful force for good in the lives of many.
