Xu Haoyi (11 years old), a fifth grade student at Wan Tzu School, started volunteering at the Active Seniors Centre near his home in Jing Wan An-Cai Shi two years ago. In order to facilitate conversations with the elderly, he learned to speak Hokkien from his grandparents, and every month he followed his parents to the rental flats to distribute food to the elderly living alone.

Koh was one of the students who received the Singapore Silent Heroes Student Awards this year. He received the award from the guest of honour, Minister of State for Education and Manpower Gan Xiaofang, at a ceremony held at the HDB Hub Auditorium in Toa Payoh on Saturday (July 27).

Xu Haoyi and his mother regularly go to the Active Senior Center to volunteer, teaching the elderly to make handicrafts and chatting with them. He said: “Most of the elderly speak dialects, which makes communication difficult at first. I learned some dialect expressions at home so that I can talk to them.”

The “Singapore Silent Hero Award” has been awarded by the Civilians Association of Singapore since 2014 to recognize ordinary people who do good and make contributions to society.

Last year, the association began to add the “Silent Student Hero” award to recognize students aged seven to 18 who are silently contributing to various corners of society.

Go to after-school care centers to help students with their homework and tutor low-income students

A total of 53 students from 24 schools were recognized this year, five of whom will receive Outstanding Performance Awards at a ceremony to be held at the Shangri-La Hotel on September 7.

Another award-winning student is Sheng Yingying (16 years old), a Form 4 student from Nanyang Girls’ High School. She goes to the student care center every month to accompany students after class to do homework and organize activities for them. In the past year, she has also frequently tutored low-income students.

To ensure the activities are lively and interesting, she also consults with her 13-year-old brother. “Since these teenagers are about my age, I can better understand their interests and needs,” she said.

Zou Yonghan (41 years old), chairman of this year’s Silent Student Hero Award Committee, said in an interview that setting up a special award for students is to encourage more young people to display a positive spirit and give them recognition.

Zou Yonghan said: “Students may not have the ability and influence to do good as adults. However, we need to start doing good from a young age, and good deeds, no matter how big or small, will help Singapore become a more compassionate and inclusive society.”
