After a long day at school, most students are usually eager to go home and relax.

However, for Nur Haziqah Riduan, a Grade 4 student from Qihua Primary School, that period was important for her to begin the community and volunteer activities that were already ingrained in her.

Since October 2022, Nur Haziqah has been actively volunteering on the first Wednesday of every month with her grandfather, Mr. Abdul Gani Ibrahim, 75, and her grandmother, Ms. Koraisha Abdul Kadir, 70, at the Food from the Heart (FFTH) distribution center at Block 824, Woodlands Street 81.

There, Nur Haziqah helped pack and distribute food items to senior citizens and families in need.

This little one’s commitment to community service is so unwavering that he received the prestigious award – the Silent Heroes Singapore (SSH) Awards (Student Category) 2025 – at the Spring Singapore Auditorium, on 5 July.

This is the third time that the Civilians Association Singapore (CAS) and the Singapore Silent Heroes Movement (SSH) have organised an awards ceremony for students with noble souls.

A total of 84 individuals from 37 schools across Singapore who showed extraordinary kindness and humanity towards the needy and their social mission were recognized.

Minister of State (Digital Information and Development and Education), Ms Jasmin Lau, was the guest of honour at the Singapore Unsung Heroes Awards presentation ceremony.

“We have always supported Nur Haziqah’s involvement in community work. We are also proud that her efforts are now being recognised,” said Ms Koraisha, who also received the 2015 Community Service Award, for her noble contributions to the community.

When asked about her involvement in volunteer work, Nur Haziqah said what started as simply accompanying her grandmother eventually developed into a continuous, tireless effort for her to help people.

“”At first, I just followed my grandmother but over time, I got used to it. Now, every time my grandmother invites me, I continue to follow and help her and her friends,” said Nur Haziqah.

Her mother, Ms. Haslin Abdul Gani, 47, an administrator and operations executive, has seen how volunteer work has shaped and changed Nur Haziqah’s character from someone who was quiet to someone who enjoys socializing with people.

“At first, he was quiet and reserved.

“But now, through her experience as a volunteer, Nur Haziqah is more open and respectful of others.”

“He knows how to communicate with people of all ages – from his peers to the elderly. He is also increasingly understanding the meaning of patience and love,” explained Ms Haslin.

At times, he faces difficulty lifting heavy bags and communicating with senior citizens who may be less than friendly or difficult to understand.

“Now I’m not afraid anymore,” he said, smiling proudly.

Nur Haziqah also welcomes the participation of other children and even older people in volunteer work.

“They need to try this volunteer work first. Once they try it, over time they will enjoy it and get used to it.”

“It’s better for them to get out there and help those in need,” he said, who is a member of the school’s eco-friendly club, Green Club , and part of the sustainability and recycling initiative , Recycle Me.
