Civilians Association Singapore (CAS), in collaboration with the SSH Alumni and Republic Polytechnic, hosted a captivating Singapore Silent Heroes (SSH) Storytelling Session on 13 May 2025. Designed to broaden the minds of youth and ignite a spirit of volunteerism, the session offered students an opportunity to interact with individuals who have pursued unique and non-traditional paths, demonstrating how ordinary people can achieve extraordinary impact.

The session began with a warm introduction by Republic Polytechnic lecturer Ms Siti Hamimah, who set the stage for an interactive and meaningful discussion.

Owen Tan, SSH 2022 Winner for Inspiring Youth and SSH Alumni Committee Chairman, led a Q&A with students, encouraging them to reflect on their own experiences and ambitions. His sharing emphasized the value of perseverance, empathy, and leading by example.

Low Mary, SSH 2023 Winner for Heart of Humanity, followed with her own story of community service, highlighting how small acts of kindness can have far-reaching effects.

Shafiqul Islam, SSH 2023 Winner for Compassionate Foreigner, closed the storytelling segment by illustrating how cultural understanding and compassion can foster meaningful social contributions.

Hamalin then introduced students to the Singapore Silent Heroes movement, encouraging them to recognize unsung individuals making a difference. Students expressed curiosity about how to nominate heroes, demonstrating their enthusiasm to contribute to society. The session also provided insights into volunteering, highlighting the many ways youth can actively participate in initiatives that support CAS’ pillars of caring and sharing.

The outcome was both inspirational and educational. Students left the session motivated to redefine success beyond conventional norms, equipped with practical ideas for volunteering, and inspired to make a positive impact. Volunteers and speakers were equally energized by the students’ curiosity and engagement. Feedback from Ms Siti Hamimah reflected the session’s impact:

By connecting youth with real-life stories of dedication and compassion, CAS continues to nurture socially conscious individuals who are ready to lead with empathy and courage, fulfilling its mission of fostering a caring, active, and inclusive community.

“The session was not only informative but also inspiring! Thank you again for your time, energy, and generosity in sharing your experiences. Most importantly, thank you for being a silent hero!”
