Carol Chong Kwai Lan
Compassionate Foreigner Winner – 2022
Nominated by: Ravethi Achutan

Already in her senior years, Mrs Carol Chong Kwai Lan, 70, used to help with administrative duties at her husband’s business. However, she had a yearning to spend her retirement years meaningfully and in 2017, she decided to volunteer with Sree Narayana Mission (SNM) (Singapore).

Carol also had her own difficulties – in 2021 she broke her wrist from a fall and had to undergo rehabilitation. This year, she also started experiencing occasional pain in her Achilles’ heel, making it difficult for her to walk. But she was undaunted and continued volunteering with the Mission.
When the Covid-19 pandemic came and non-essential physical volunteering had to be suspended, she enquired if there were any other ways, she could help. Last year, she started helping as a Phone Befriender, making a phone call to two seniors once every fortnight to provide emotional support. When the COVID-19 restrictions eased this year, Carol promptly returned to the Mission to continue her good work.

To date, Carol has completed about 100 sessions of morning therapy exercises, 50 sessions of arts and craft and 30 phone calls to seniors between 2017 to 2022. Her selfless actions have made a difference to around 30 seniors.
