Owen Tan Ka Churn
Inspiring Youth Winner – 2022
Nominated by: Lavinia Tang Hui Si

Owen Tan has been an active volunteer with Youth Corps Singapore, an organisation of volunteers that aims to create a socially inclusive society, for many years. In these years he has made a demonstrable contribution to seniors through leading by example.

He initiated Project Jiak Simi in 2016, where he led a team of youth volunteers in bringing residents of Thong Teck Home for Senior Citizens for monthly meal outings. The project was very well-received by both youth volunteers and seniors. When COVID-19 struck, Project JiakSimi took a hiatus, but Owen continued to support the nursing home, by fundraising for essential items that the home required and has continued it to this day.
During COVID-19, he also worked closely with Thye Hua Kwan Hospital in Ang Mo Kio to distribute lunch every Saturday morning to seniors living in rental flats. Under his leadership, the project quickly expanded to cover two other blocks, eventually providing meals to 120 seniors.
In addition to his passion for serving seniors, Owen has also stepped forward to help Singaporeans in other ways. During the haze crisis in 2015, Owen was part of a Youth Corps team that distributed masks to MacPherson and Toa Payoh residents. He has also previously volunteered regularly with the Institute of Mental Health and the Admiralty Care Corner.

Since 2018, Owen has been an active volunteer with Cycling Without Age, which gives free trishaw rides to Singapore seniors, such as residents of Sree Narayana Home.

Besides being actively involved in multiple ways, Owen is also dedicated to cultivating the next generation of youth volunteers. He has been sharing with students in post-secondary educational institutions on the know-hows of engaging and befriending seniors.
