Seeing good even in times of crisis – Amos Liu

“You can never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could never before.” By Rahm Emanuel. In this trying time, we heard news of panic, fear, disdain and some even resentment.”
However, we also heard about heart-warming stories. A hand sanitizer in the lift, public distribution of masks, distribution of notes of encouragement to our healthcare workers and the utilization of tech to contribute are few examples of effort that goes a long way and spread the crucial message of how we are all in this together.
Private hospitals supporting public hospitals to lighten their load , religious organizations and individuals opening up their spaces to support Malaysian workers, the generosity of people and organizations in providing food & beverages for our healthcare workers, ground up initiatives spurring to protect our vulnerable seniors and even making hand-sanitizers to donate to our vulnerable communities shows how the private, public and people sector are coming together to help Singapore ride through this wave. Individually, our actions of social responsible practices and compliance to the measures that government have set in place are individual efforts to help mitigate this Covid19 situation. It is in this trying time that we break our silos and realised that we are all inter-dependent.
On Feb 9, my friend from Pivotal Youth gathered a bunch of us to explore deeper issues about what is happening and what we can do to support the state of things back then. We talked though and empathized with the different emotions that are rising and then pushed out the #SGWholeCommunities movement in hopes to promote positivity online. This simple rallying within just a day has really demonstrated what a community is capable of as long as we come together.
Even at my workplace, I hear stories about people wanting to step forward and play a part in this difficult time. It is indeed times like these that provide opportunities for communities to rally and step up to express the care we have for our fellow people in this country, regardless of race, religion and nationality.
