Ms. Oh Siew May
Hearts of Humanity Category
(Care & Disabilities) Winner – 2017
Nominated by Ms Nakeisha Tan

Siew May has had cerebral palsy since young. Yet she has not let this hold her back and had defied all odds.

Despite her disability, which affects body movements, muscle control, muscle coordination, muscle tone, reflexes, posture and balance, she decided to enrol in a 6.7km long distance run. She joined a running group catering to people with special needs and trained for weeks. On 1 December 2013, she completed the run.

“It was really hard for me to run, but i did it.”
Siew May reportedly said after the run.

Her book “Scaling Walls” touches on the challenges of coping with Cerebal Palsy, and her journey on how she overcame it. A portion of the sales from her book are being donated to the Spastic Children’s Association of Singapore and other charities. Siew May is a walking testimony of what can be achieved despite physical obstacles when you set your mind to it.
