Mr. Tan Kok Sing
Pioneer of Promise Category Winner – 2018
Nominated by: Ms. Debbie Lee
At the grand old age of 93, Mr Tan Kok Sing (known as ‘Chen Bo’ to many) is an inspiration for an active lifestyle. Mr Tan founded the Tiong Bahru Garden Joggers (TBGJ) in 1977 to help teenagers kick bad habits like glue sniffing.
Gradually, that organisation has ‘morphed’ into a movement to inspire people of all ages to lead healthy lifestyles and to be useful citizens. He also set up a basketball team which includes senior citizens and domestic helpers. Although Mr Tan suffered a stroke in 2009 that caused him to lose sensation in his legs, and was wheelchair bound for three months, he was resilient. He rebuilt his fitness through sit-ups and push-ups, and through diligent rehabilitation, is now able to walk again.
Mr Tan’s generous spirit extends across Singapore. He gives out goodies to children playing at Pasir Ris Park, and NTUC vouchers to parking attendants and hawker centre cleaners. His reason for doing so is to motivate service workers to be professional and maintain a good attitude in their work.
In 2017, Mr Tan donated $100,000 to the One Team Singapore Fund, in TBGJ’s name. He was the first donor to the fund. His aim was to support elite Singapore athletes so that they may reach their fullest potential and bring glory to Singapore.
